Read more< 1 minute read Black holes (BHs) have become mainstream, since the detection of gravitational waves produced by the merger of binary BHs to the image of the shadow of the BH in M87. We have searched for the largest BH in the universe, the obvious place is the center of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG). We propose that the BCG Holmberg 15A in the cluster Abell 85 could host the largest BH in the local universe, with a mass larger than 10^10 solar masses. Why can they attain larger masses? What is their origin?

Read more< 1 minute read Throughout ancient history, humans have taken help of astronomy to navigate on Earth. I will present an overview of how humans are now designing to explore interplanetary space using X-ray pulsars (a.k.a. space GPS). I will also discuss case studies of some animals like dung-beetles use astronomy to navigate in their everyday life. I will touch upon the inspiration that astronomers obtain from structural designs of some animals (e.g., lobsters) to build X-ray spacecrafts with greater observing efficiency.
Read more2 minutes read The global challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the longer term effects of climate change require coordinated efforts by the scientific and engineering communities to provide accurate information to government officials to guide them as they put in place evidenced-based governmental policies to mitigate and adapt to these major challenges. I will discuss recent joint international programs sponsored by the Optical Society (OSA) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for developing and deploying photonics instrumentation to measure and monitor greenhouse and air pollution gases in urban settings and an innovative program sponsored by the OSA Foundation for deploying UV-C based safe and effective decontamination equipment for decontaminating personal protection equipment in limited resource setting. These programs are coordinating the activities of international teams of OSA and AGU scientists and engineers and are providing them with the opportunities to productively engage with government officials in their regions and make significant contributions to meeting these global challenges.
